That piece about Martin Luther King being a Republican is really awful. Probably the most atrocious revisionism is the assertion that that the Republicans tried "to get Christians in the South to stop voting for Democrats who did not share their values and were still discriminating against their fellow Christians who happened to be black." That ain't who Reagan was trying to reach in 1980 when he talked about "state's rights" in Neshoba County, Mississippi, where three civil rights workers had been murdered in 1964.
Well, I wasn't there when Reagan said that. But I do just about every time Democrats complain about talk about "state's rights," they're implying racism -- which is pretty ironic considering they're the party that filibustered the civil rights act, etc, etc.
I said it was interesting; I don't know how much is true. But the black affinity for the Democrats has always puzzled me.
It wasn't the Democratic Party that filibustered the Civil Rights Act. It was Democratic senators from the south. Democrats from the north supported the bill and it never would have passed but for a Democratic President from Texas. There were Republicans on both sides of the issue as well.
I can't recall any Republican filibustering the Civil Rights Act, but then I really wasn't around then.
I do know GOP ended slavery, made some attempts to help freed slaves, gave them the ability to vote, and tried to protect them from the Jim Crow laws. The Dems passed Jim Crow laws and stood against desegregation and civil rights.
That's just history. Don't worry, your party's safe -- they've since managed to buy off plenty of the people they tried to keep under their boots. And put them into a cycle of perpetual dependence on the government ... maybe you shouldn't publicize that, either.
